Hello! Thank you for choosing Lea Island Excursions for your next adventure. My name is Jacob Lea, aka "Capt. Jake". I was born and raised right here in coastal North Carolina, and I have lived just a couple of miles from Lea Island my entire life! I have spent decades exploring the salt marshes and beaches of Southeastern North Carolina, and I cannot wait to share it all with you!
As a child I spent every summer swimming, exploring, and fishing on Lea Island with my family. Today, you can find me doing these same things with my wife, Candace and our two kids, Summer (11) and Reece (8), along with our trusty black lab, Sugar! My passion for all things saltwater drove me to obtain a degree in Marine Technology from Cape Fear Community College in 2007. This amazing program helped to refine my seamanship skills and further expand my knowledge of marine biology in our area. I am a fourth generation seafood dealer and have spent the past 20 years working in the seafood industry, which has kept me deeply rooted in fishing and all things ocean related!
After all, it is the commercial fishing industry that helped Lea Island gain its name. In the early 1950's my relatives purchased the island from the North Carolina Board of Education to secure fishing grounds for the fall roe mullet season. The roe mullet fishery once involved airplanes, automobiles, and fishing camps- all right here on Lea Island! Today, only a small fraction of the Island remains in the family, but nonetheless, Lea Island truly holds a special place in my heart.
With ties to the Civil War, WWII, and a family fishing legacy, we will certainly have plenty to talk about on our trip! Rest assured; the safety of your group is my top priority. As a USCG 25 ton Master Captain, I am Adult/Infant CPR, First Aid, & AED certified. Please feel free to call, text, or email, with any questions you may have. If there is anything I can do to accommodate you or anyone in your party, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Now, lets get you on a boat!
